LOSS OF PURPOSE
DENIM PROJECT
RMIT 2019
SEMESTER 1 FINAL
An idea influenced by the exaggeration of the loss of purpose in the functionality of clothing caused by the constant push of fast pace style influencing fast fashion and in return it's impact on the environment.

DEVELOPMENT
Technical sketches were created by hand rather than on the computer. This allowed for illustrational sketches to also be made which helped to generate the style of fit on the body.

The development of this project was very intensive due to the amount of trails and samples that were needed. Samples of multiple variations of both pockets and zips were created as well as a full final toile/sample before the final could be started. This ensured that all variables were decided on and the final could be created with confidence.

The final submission for the semester final included a final instagram post which included a short video showing the movement of the garment. As well as images that showed the creative inspiration of the piece. The inspiration of the concept came from the idea of fast fashion however looking at the aspect of purpose or rather the loss of. The loss of purpose particularly in that of denim comes from the history of denim. Denim jeans were once only worn by the working class with one pair that was worn to work. These days everyone has at least one pair of jeans if not many more and the original purpose of the denim has been lost. Many years ago the majority of the population would only have clothing to meet a purpose without unnecessary extra buying. Individuals would have a coat for the purpose of keeping them warm. One coat for one purpose. This has drastically changed due to the possibilities that fast fashion has created.

The pants include many different design elements to help communicate this loss of purpose within the garment and fast fashion today. The top of the pants are all fake with a fake fly front, pockets and second waist band. Instead the pants have a hidden side zip for functionality only. There are zips throughout the pant legs that open yet to nothing giving them no purpose to the garment and their functionality is now lost. Again there are overly thin pockets on the pant legs which while still work have lost their purpose as they are too thin to fit anything inside them. A major design feature of the garment insluce the manipulation of the bottom of the pant where the foot would usually go through has been totally sewn up to totally cut our its purpose. To allow the pants to be functionally sound a zip has been manipulated to become the hole for the foot.
